I understand what you are saying, Randy, just a difference of opinion and preference .
I still like his playing with REO (like he played with anyone else!) I thought the groove was good, and the creativity of his beats and fills were above-average for that style and era of music.
Regarding the sound...
Yes, it was the taped-up "studio" sound of that era. My point was simply that the drums did not sound "wimpy" on the records, and I don't think he was too heavy-handed of a hitter. Granted, super-close miking of the toms and extra EQ probably accounted for much, if not most, of that sound.
I'd put John Panozzo in that same group: good rock drummer, creative parts, and meaty sound without too much bashing....compared to say Liberty DeVitto or Kenny Aronoff.
In any event, weren't most pop drummers using a lot of tape and concert toms in those days? Even Jeff, Vinnie, Gadd, and others had a taped-up sound back then, but it sounds good on the records.
I'll add one more drummer to my list (as if this thread hasn't gone on long enough). Local Chicago drummer Tommy Scheckle. He played with Jonathan Brandmeier (Chicago DJ that moved out to LA a few years back ) in the late '80's and with the Buckinghams "manure-tour" of suburban summer-fests in the '90s. Very solid rock drummer....kind of well known among local drummers.

Alan Gratzer? Big sound? I guess if you tape your drumheads and use concert toms then that's a big sound......Alan never did anything for me.....sorry

One drummer that I believe is over looked a lot is Graham Broad Who has drummed for Roger Waters for awhile. In Roger?s live album In the Flesh Live 2000 DVD Graham really lays down some tasty grooves that really compliment both Roger?s and Pink Floyd?s music.

Ben Perwosky is another one of those unsung drumming heroes with great time, musicality and chops galore. This guy can do the fusion funk thing and then turn around and do the rock or staight ahead jazz thing. My kind of guy. PT.

Pockettime stole my idea (BP).
Lost Tribe was a GREAT band.
BUT!
Here is another one.
Bill Berg Drummer for The Wayne Johnson Trio
Awesome feel & chops.
Haven't heard anything from him since then, but if you can find anything from the Trio...get it.

Although he is well known,( and not the most underrated by any means) I can't think of any drummer that can really handle as many situations as Peter Erskine.
From electronic drumming with Steps Ahead to big band with Bob Mintzer and Kenton, to the funky gigs with Mike Stern and Scofield and the Yellowjackets to post-war chamberesque playing with Mark Anthony Turnage to brazilian grace with Eliane Elias to Diana Krall, from free playing with the Knitting Factory creww to the sublime ECM records he's played on... It just goes on and on and on...
Can't think of a more all round drummer that has the conceptual mind to cover all of these different gigs.
How does he do that ? -- to keep the spark to play it all?

OMGoodness, yes, Perowsky, how'd I forget him...the stuff he did/does w Stern & Scofield
& Berg - yes! He was also great w Flim & the BBs! [Same Bill Berg, if I'm not mistaken!]. Check out Tricycle ['83], Tunnel ['84], & Neon ['87].
9th-inning add-ons:
Rick Gratton, Dave DiCenso, Erik Smith, Martin Valihora, Jimmy Branley, Vito Rezza, Mark Craney, Casey Scheuerell, A Newmark [repeats - i'm pretty sure we've mentioned these b4]... ;c)
blake - [...he(PE) eats his Wheaties every day ...watches re-runs of the Little Rascals ...& holds onto his socks ]

I remember having seen Perowsky with the Mike Stern Trio, Alain Caron was on bass... VERY VERY GOOD. I don't know if he uses the Open Handed technic on a full time basis, but he sure did that Night.
